I think one of my favourite inclusive pieces that will be incorporated into the new playground is this cool roller slide (you can find this particular slide in Picton, ON). Did you know? 🤷‍♀️🦻 If you have hearing aids or cochlear implants, regular slides can be a no-go because of the static they produce. The roller slide makes no static, and it also provides some super fun sensory feedback! Not only that, the heavier you are the faster you go... so grown ups be prepared if you decide to give it a try 🤣This sweet girl was kind enough to demo the slide for you, broken leg and all! We will be sending out a fundraising update in the next few weeks... we are SO excited to share our progress with you! The results are in from the IPP Accessibility Week Fundraising Challenge and we cannot believe the amazing response from both the @limestonedsb and @algonquin_lakeshore. While the money was by no means our main goal for Accessibility Week, we are so honoured to be on the receiving end of everyone's hard work! Collaboratively across both schools boards staff and students raised over $6,000 towards our inclusive playground equipment 🥹 Tied for 1st place we had the centre class at St. Thomas More Catholic School and the kindergarten and DD class at Polson Park Public School... both groups raised $1000 each! We are so excited to see this amazing generation of change makers stepping up to help ensure inclusion becomes the norm in years to come. We had 40 agencies attend the IPP Inclusive Fun Fair on Saturday to stand behind our playground project, and to help us advocate for inclusive play! ❤️ We were so honoured by the outpouring of support, and so excited to also help showcase to the community all the amazing work these groups/organizations are already doing here in Kingston! Every group brought an amazing set up, with all kinds of creative games and activities. We saw everything from cornhole to mini putt to multi sensory tables. We had several families say how neat it was to learn about so many groups they had never heard of! I didn't manage to get a photo of everyone, but here are a few smiling faces you might recognize from the event. Thank you again to all these agencies for their support, their time and their fabulous energy! We were also asked on several occasions if we will be running the event again next year... The IPP Inclusive Fun Fair is THIS SATURDAY! 🤩🍿🎡 Come out with your family and friends for a wonderful event in support the Inclusive Play Project and inclusive play here in Kingston. Many other cities have these amazing places and Kingston should be one of them! An inclusive playground allows children and adults of all abilities to play together and creates a fun, nurturing environment for everyone. These playgrounds are accessible (e.g. rubberized surfacing, ramps and wheelchair rocker), but also have classic features you would see in a typical playground (e.g. slides and monkey bars). We are working closely with the City, and the proposed site for the inclusive play space is Shannon Park in the Rideau Heights District. This park is an ideal location because it already has several accessibility features, and is close to the Community Centre with an accessible washroom. A Canadian commercial playground company that specializes in inclusive playgrounds has provided us with an amazing design to get us started. Many children with accessible needs face challenges every day in life. We all know and value how important outside play is. The simple childhood joy of playing outdoors shouldn’t be limited by abilities. Sadly, this is the reality for countless children. The solution is a playground that is designed to be inclusive for EVERYONE. Our IPP group is working very hard behind the scenes to get ready for Accessibility Week 2024! Accessibility Week runs from May 26 - June 1. The theme this year is "Built without Barriers", which we think is an amazing focus for IPP! @limestonedsb and @algonquin_lakeshore are jumping on board with us to help launch our campaign. Oh my gosh these posts just keep getting BETTER! 🥹❤️ With the warmer weather approaching, we are thrilled to announce Sunrise Medical has generously donated TWO Leckey advance bath chairs (on wheeled shower bases), in different sizes to be used at the Shannon Park splash pad! The chairs will be housed at the Rideau Heights Community Centre for families to borrow free of charge in the summer months. We know this will be a game changer for so many families who have kids, teens or young adults who are wheelchair users, because not everyone's wheelchair can get wet! The adult size change table and lift at the community centre will also be available to transfer kiddos safely in and out of the bath chairs as needed. Accessibility aside a moment, can we talk about play inclusion for OLDER kids here in Kingston? I have received so many messages from families explaining that many of the playgrounds we have here in Kingston seem to be geared at toddlers, or young children under 5. These structures don't hold much play value for kids ages 6-12 because they are usually one level, don't offer challenge and risk, or give any level of thrill and excitement. I had one kiddo put it this way, "I don't want to leave the playground because I'm bored, I want to leave because I'm tired!" I've also heard countless families tell me they often travel out to Napanee because their kids love the tower at the Rotary Park. Why are we having to drive to other municipalties to access more inclusive play spaces? 🧐 What do you think? Please share a comment below! Let's talk about fences 👌 When we were doing our initial design for the playground, we asked families the types of features they would like to see at an inclusive playground. Can you guess what was near the top of the list? ... a fence! As a twin mom, when my kiddos were toddlers I hardly ever took them to the park, unless I had another adult with me. Without fail, one would run in one direction while the other one took off the other way! A fully fenced in playground would have been a game changer for us in the summertime. I've spoken to countless parents whose kiddo with special needs is an elopement risk. Or parents of kiddos with physical needs who need a lot of assistance on the play equipment, but their younger sibling(s) are then left to roam free in all directions. To be honest, we've had some kick back on this. "It doesn't look nice". "It makes the park look like it's private property". "Fences are not inviting". Let me tell you, the education piece around the fencing has been super satisfying for me and we aren't backing down on this one 💪 Playgrounds should be for everyone... and in order to achieve that, safety fencing is a must. Now featuring… The We-saw!! The We-saw is a unique seesaw that can hold way more people than your typical seesaw!! It is a gentle rocker with walk-in seating making it a comfortable piece of playground equipment for all ages. The seats of the We-saw are at a great height for transfer from wheelchairs and they provide a lot of back support. Featuring Rubber Surfacing! Rubber surfacing provides accessible flooring for wheelchair users and physically disabled individuals. It is shock absorbent and does not splinter, making it playground safe! Many cool colours and patterns can be incorporated into the surfacing making more fun on the playground. The Inclusive Play Project is a group of passionate community members who are working towards creating a fully inclusive playground in Kingston. An inclusive playground allows children and adults of all abilities to play together and creates a fun, nurturing environment for everyone! There are many inclusive playgrounds across Ontario, and we would love to add Kingston to the list!
